Mr. Garrison
6th Grade
ELA and Science

Welcome to 6th grade!

I am Ben Garrison, a life-long learner, with a passion for creating exciting curriculum and group leadership. I earned my teaching degree and Masters in Education from UCSC in 2021. Prior to that I taught English and life skills for five years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Panama. And recently, I moved to Nevada City from the Santa Cruz area where I taught 6th and 7th grade language arts for 4 years.

As a teacher I enjoy leading activities that are collaborative, and experiential, and encourage students to participate creatively. I am a warm demander who shows care by holding students to high academic standards, and facilitating a positive classroom environment that is nurturing each individuals’ social connection and emotional needs. I am inspired by the opportunity to join the NCSA team this year!

Best wishes,

Mr Garrison

6th Grade ELA

Students will engage in three major writing units: narrative, argumentative, and informational writing. Students will explore themselves and the world around them, thinking critically about their environment, while honing their writing skills. Students are encouraged to read 30 minutes a night at home. In class, students will read daily and participate in guided reading groups, individual reading, and whole-class novels.

6th Grade Science:

Our explorations in 6th-grade science will examine the complexity of life on Earth by diving into the smallest components of living beings (cells), the interactions between the living world and an ever-changing climate, and the impacts humans are having on our planet.
